More and more companies are choosing the ISO 22301:2019 standard for Business Continuity Management.
ISO 22301:2019 is an international standard that provides a framework for the implementation and maintenance of an effective Business Continuity Management System. The purpose of the standard is to ensure the continuity of an organization’s operations in the event of emergencies, such as natural disasters, cyber-attacks, and other situations of crisis. It applies to all organizations, large or small, public or private, for-profit or non-profit.
A research conducted in 2020 by ISO on standard management system certifications is of particular interest, reporting a general increase of over 17% in certifications. Specifically, the 22301 standard showed an increase of 30.24% in 2020 compared to 2019[1].
An example of an organization that obtained the ISO 22301:2019 standard in 2020 is Flipkart. Flipkart is an Indian company and one of the largest e-commerce companies. An indicative example of the company’s size is that its sales numbers for electronics and mobile phones are very close to those of Amazon[2]. In a related announcement issued by the organization after obtaining the ISO 22301 standard, the company’s commitment to continuous improvement is emphasized, as well as the creation of a relationship of utmost trust with its customers[3].
Another example of an organization certified with the ISO 22301 standard, which demonstrates the heterogeneity among the organizations that this standard targets, is Google. The company’s data centers are certified with ISO 22301:2019[4]. Practically, this means that even in the event of unexpected events, Google users continue to have access to their data as it has been transferred to another data center.
